In an effort to reduce the amputation rate in diabetics, the Therapeutic Shoe Bill, or "Diabetic Shoe Bill" was passed.  Medicare has extended coverage to diabetic patients for footwear and inserts.  Medicare will cover one of the following:

• 1 pair of extra-depth shoes and up to 3 pairs of multi-density inserts
• 1 pair of extra-depth shoes including a modification, and up to 2 pairs of multi-density inserts
• 1 pair of custom-molded shoes and up to 2 pairs of multi-density inserts

Criteria to qualify for diabetic shoes include:

• Diabetic neuropathy
• Previous ulcer or amputation
• Pre-ulcerative callous
• Foot deformity (i.e. bunion, hammertoes, tailors bunion)

Platte Valley Foot and Ankle Clinic uses shoes from Dr. Comfort and Aetrex.  There are many different designs and colors to choose from.  Medicare will cover 80% of the cost of the shoe/inserts, and your secondary will cover the other 20%, so rarely is there an out-of-pocket cost to the patient.
